UN Investigator says Khashoggi killing was Premeditated by Saudi Officials

Since the murder of anti-government journalist Khashoggi, Saudi Arabian leadership has come under pressure internationally. According to UN investigations, representatives of riads are responsible for the spoiling.

The UN Special Rapporteur Agnès Callamard has blamed representatives of the Riad for the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. She has gathered evidence that Khashoggi has been the victim of a “brutal and deliberate killing” – “planned and executed by representatives of the Saudi state,” she said.

Khashoggi, who had lived in exile in the United States, was assassinated in October 2018 in the consulate of Istanbul by a special force from Saudi Arabia. He wanted to pick up papers there for his planned wedding. His body has not been found so far.

Saudi Arabia has also hampered Turkey’s investigation into the Kashoggi murder case, said Callamard, who had traveled to Turkey at the end of January to investigate the murder case. There she met, among others, the Turkish Foreign Minister. Callamard denounced the abuse of diplomatic “immunity” by Saudis to commit “unpunished” homicide.

The Saudi authorities did not allow a thorough investigation of the crime scene, Callamard said. The evidence collected showed that Khashoggi had been “the victim of a brutal and deliberate killing.” The Saudi authorities planned and executed the murder. The investigator reports to the UN Human Rights Council on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions.

The murder demanded “the urgent attention of the international community, including the UN,” said Callamard. She wants to submit a detailed report to the UN Human Rights Council in June.

Saudi Arabia had initially denied the death of Khashoggi for weeks. Later, eleven people were arrested in connection with the killing, including members from the immediate vicinity of the Crown Prince.
